Discover New Music: Oh Pep!

With influences including Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and Bright Eyes, classically trained musicians Olivia Hally (guitar/vocals) and Pepita Emmerichs (fiddle/mandolin) are creating a unique type of folk/pop as Oh Pep! The Australian based duo’s sound seamlessly combines the folk elements learned from their musical influences with poppy hooks, punchy drums, tight harmonies, and lush layers of instrumentation. NPR Music‘s Bob Boilen has stated, “Their pop sensibilities offer more twists and turns than the usual ‘verse/chorus’ formula, but there are still big, catchy hooks.” Oh Pep! has released three stunning EPs that have received accolades including two Best Folk Roots Album nominations at The Age Music Victoria Awards for their 2014 effort II and 2015’s Living. The duo is set to release their debut album Stadium Cake on June 24th, and has been named one of KEXP’s “bands to watch” this year. Oh Pep! will be embarking on a North American tour to support their new release, which includes a July 8th stop upstairs at World Cafe Live.

Staff Pick: Justin Nozuka

Canadian singer-songwriter Justin Nozuka broke into the mainstream at just 19 years old with the 2007 single “After Tonight” off his debut album Holly. Since then, he’s released 2 full-length studio albums and 2 EPs spanning a range of genres from soul to folk. Most recently was the Chestnut Spoke To Maple EP, released late last year, featuring 4 tender acoustic ballads.

Nozuka embarks on a short northeast tour this June- his first in over 2 years. Whether he’s covering Sade’s “By Your Side” or jamming out on originals like “Criminal”, his smooth vocal runs will have you swooning in your seat. But don’t just take my word for it; see for yourself on June 21st!
